Four blind types cover almost every Singapore home: roller, combi, venetian and roman. They are often presented as a matter of taste, but each one genuinely behaves differently. Choosing well is mostly about matching that behaviour to the room.

Roller Blind

The simplest of the four — a single panel of fabric on a tube. It rolls up compactly, sits very close to the glass and gives a clean, uncluttered line.

  • Best for: kitchens, service yards, bathrooms and any window where simplicity and easy wiping matter.
  • Strength: minimal depth and a very tidy look.
  • Trade-off: light control is largely all-or-nothing. It is up, or it is down.

Combi Blind

Also called a day-and-night or zebra blind. Two layers of alternating sheer and solid bands slide over each other, so aligning the solid bands blocks light and offsetting them lets a filtered band of light through.

  • Best for: living rooms and studies that need adjustable brightness through the day.
  • Strength: a genuine range between bright and dim, in one product.
  • Trade-off: it will not fully black out a room.

Venetian Blind

Horizontal slats that tilt as well as raise. The tilt is the point — angling the slats upward bounces daylight onto the ceiling and into the room without any direct beam.

  • Best for: home offices, study rooms and any window facing direct sun.
  • Strength: the most precise light control of the four, and excellent against screen glare.
  • Trade-off: slats collect dust and take longer to clean than a flat panel.

Roman Blind

Fabric that draws up into soft horizontal folds. It reads far more like a curtain than a blind, bringing warmth and texture while still stacking neatly at the top.

  • Best for: bedrooms and living rooms where a softer look is wanted without full curtains.
  • Strength: the most decorative option, and good at darkening in a heavier fabric.
  • Trade-off: the folded stack sits over the top of the glass, so it covers a little more of the window when raised.

  • Direct sun or screen glare — venetian
  • Should feel soft and warm — roman

Homes rarely use just one. Rollers in the wet areas with roman or combi blinds in the living spaces is an extremely common and sensible combination.
